Race for Deanship Enters Final Lap in CRUTECH

-Race for Deanship Enters Final Lap in CRUTECH-
The race for election of new Deans of Faculties has entered its final lap in Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH) with the Faculty of Communication Technology and Faculty of Science set to elect their Deans today, respectively.

A notice of meeting signed by Mrs Zili Terry Odey, Faculty Officer, Faculty of Communication Technology, indicates that the election would be the only item in the agenda of a meeting scheduled to take place in the Faculty’s Print Studio, at 11.00 am today, 22nd May 2018.

The release states that: “To be eligible to be nominated, a candidate must possess a Ph.D degree and shall hold the rank of a Professor in any Academic Department in the Faculty. In the absence of a Professor however, candidates not below the rank of Senior Lecturer may be qualified to be nominated and elected in Acting capacity.”

Consequently, Dr Ndoma Brown, immediate past Head of Department of Mass Communication, Dr Jacob Agba, Coordinator of Post Graduate program in Mass Communication and Dr Patrick Ineji, Secretary, Academic Staff Union of Universities, CRUTECH branch, respectively picked nomination forms for election into the position of Dean in the Faculty of Communication Technology.

However, there are strong indications that only two candidates are now left in the race for that position, judging from the content of a message jointly signed yesterday by Dr Ineji and Dr Agba and sent to staff of the Faculty.

The message states that: “Dear Comrade, with great joy we, UNITED & TOGETHER, notify you of our consolidated position on the Deanship of the Faculty of Communication Technology: Our candidate in that election holding 11am tomorrow is Dr. Jacob Agba…. A vote for Dr Jacob Agba is a vote for Dr Patrick Ineji.”

It would be interesting to see how this development would affect the outcome of today’s exercise.

Dr Ndoma Brown, Dr Jacob Agba and Dr Patrick Ineji were classmates during their undergraduate program at the University of Cross River State, Uyo. These three Lecturers seem to have remained close, since their undergraduate years.

Meanwhile, the camps of Dr Brown and Dr Agba have been very vocal in their respective campaigns for election of their candidates, especially through the social media.

For instance, a campaign poster released by Dr Brown’s Committee of Friends and shared via Whatsapp lists his achievements as a scholar and former Head of Department of Mass Communication, among which are that “he has the highest number of academic publications in the Department of Mass Communication” and “he has been appointed HOD three consecutive times. He declined the third for professional reasons.”

Similarly, a campaign message signed by Friends of Dr Jacob Agba and shared through Whatsapp presents him as a “seasoned administrator, team worker, multifaceted achiever, erudite scholar and respected mentor.” The message also presents past and present great Political Leaders such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt of the USA, Thomas Gore of the USA, Turkish-born Esref Armagan, Abdurrahman Wahid of Indonesia, and others, as persons with physical impairments who did not allow their respective impairments to deter them from achieving lofty heights in life. Dr Jacob Agba is visually impaired.

In the Faculty of Science, the race for election into the position of Dean is scheduled to hold at 2.00 pm today. Professor A. 1. Okoi, Dr Igwe Ewona and Dr Emmanuel Obi are in the race for election in that Faculty.

A similar race is scheduled to take place at the Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Environmental Science respectively, tomorrow.
