-Former Spokesman Relegated at PDP’s National Party Convention –
Olisa Metuh, former spokesman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was today reportedly prevented from entering the State Box of Eagle Square, Abuja, venue of the party’s national convention. According to news reports from that convention, he was walking into the State Box when security personnel halted him.
No explanation has been offered for that action that relegates him from his previous exalted position. Olisa Metuh reportedly later joined delegates from Anambra State elsewhere, at Eagle Square.
Meanwhile, latest reports from that convention indicate that voting began around 4.00 pm and ended just before 8.00 pm. Counting of votes has reportedly started. It is expected that results would be announced later tonight or very early tomorrow.
At the time of voting, TVC Nigeria reported in the station’s 6.00 pm news broadcast that delegates at the convention were given a “unity list” containing names of those that should be voted for, at the convention.
According to that news broadcast, Uche Secondus of Rivers State tops that list as the party’s incoming Chairman. The station stated that despite the existence of that list reportedly compiled by some Governors of the party, the formal voting process is mandatory and would either conform with the list or denounce it.
TVC Nigeria equally reported that Alhaji Adewale Adeyanju, a former national auditor of the party and aspirant for the office of Treasurer, “cried out that he has been denied screening by the screening committee because they said that his tax clearance was not genuine and his voters’ card was not genuine”.
According to the television station, those papers were all genuine when newsmen examined them. The station added that when newsmen asked Alhaji Adewale why he is suffering that fate, he explained that some people are insinuating that he belongs to Senator Buruji Kashamu and Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff faction. For this reason, Alhaji Adeyanju said some people are insinuating that he is perceived as a threat to the party.
In addition, a breaking news story broadcast at 10.00 pm by TVC Nigeria revealed that Professor Tunde Adeniran, a contestant for the position of PDP’s national Chairman, has condemned the conduct of the election. He condemned the election through Taiwo Akeju, spokesman of his campaign organization. Taiwo Akeju claimed that Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State masterminded malpractice at the convention. Therefore, Professor Adeniran’s campaign organization has called for a cancellation of the election. The organization has requested that a Board of Trustees should organise credible elections since the party’s Caretaker Committee’s tenure ended tonight.
Professor Adeniran vied as a consensus candidate from the South -West of Nigeria and is regarded as a strong challenger to Uche Secondus, from the South – South.
In another development, the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) of the Peoples Democratic Party has suspended Senator Buruji Kashamu for a period of one month. The party’s official twitter handle (@OfficialPDPNig) announced this suspension but gave no reason for it. The statement promised to provide details of this development later.
