-Politics is not Life and Death, says Obasanjo-
Against the backdrop of violence and bitterness that sometimes characterize the game of politics, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has stated that politics is not a matter of life and death.
Obasanjo stated this yesterday in Calabar at the public presentation of a book titled: “Stepping Forward with Uti J.D. Agba.” The book is written by Goddy Jedy Agba and Matthias Okoi-Uyouyo.
Former President Obasanjo was guest of honour at the presentation. He disclosed that Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State confided in him that Goddy Jedy Agba, co-author of the book, “is a very good man”. It would be recalled that Goddy Jedy Agba contested for the Governorship of Cross River State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He lost that race at the party’s primaries, to Professor Ben Ayade who proceeded to win at the general elections.
Therefore, former President Olusegun Obasanjo submitted that Governor Ayade’s endorsement of Goddy Jedy Agba is exemplary. He said: “If you cannot be the chief servant you can be the assistant chief servant. This is because the chief servant cannot do it on his own. He has to work with others.”
Governor Ben Ayade spoke in the same vein and stated that all politicians should work together for the development of the society, irrespective of personal and party differences. He said that Goddy Jedy Agba has been working for the development of Cross River State. According to the Governor, “Power is like the wind which blows away. In using power, one must do so with the fear of God”. The Governor disclosed that he has weathered several storms together with Goddy Jedy Agba and added that “I take special exception to any form of politics that come to divide us.”
The Governor said that Uti J.D. Agba, Paramount Ruler of Obudu and father of Goddy Jedy Agba, was his late father’s classmate. Thus, he announced a personal donation of N5 million for the biography of the Paramount Ruler. He also announced a donation of N5 million naira for purchase of copies of the book for the state library, on behalf of the state government.
Co-author of the book, Goddy Jedy Agba, urged the people of Cross River State to stay united, for the good and development of the state.
The book was reviewed by Professor Kalu Uka of the University of Uyo.
Speakers at the occasion described Uti J.D. Agba as the longest serving monarch in Africa and the second longest serving monarch in the world. He is 85 years old and has been the Paramount Ruler of Obudu for 58 years.
The event was graced by dignitaries such as the Etsu Nupe of Nupe Kingdom, Alhaji (DR) Yahaya Abubakar, the Obong of Calabar, Edidem Okon Abasi-Otu V, former Governor of Cross River State, Sen Liyel Imoke and others.
